A proposal to divide California into six states has received enough signatures to make the November 2016 ballot. Here’s how.
what is the point of this besides a colossal waste of time and money
also where the hell did jefferson come fromWant to know who this creates a huge plus for? Republicans.
You see, California mainly comes out as a largely Democratic state, and holds the most Electoral Votes in the Union (being 53). Now, that being said, the map above doesn’t show the political affiliation of the states creates.
Below, I’ve divided the state with a map used in the 2012 election.
In red, you see the Republicans. In Blue, the Democrats. Based on this map, you’ve created three states for each party.
And, for estimation, we’re going to ALSO equally divide the electoral votes: 53 / 6 = Roughly 8 votes a piece.
Meaning, now, Republicans have an extra 24 electoral votes.
Why is this a problem?
California is the only state that’s prevented Republican majorities to invade the main, federal law system for the past few years. And who, you ask, become the number one state in terms of electoral votes if California is broken up?
I rest my case.
I don’t think it’s fair to simply divide 53 by 6. Electoral votes are determined based on a state’s population, so you’d have to take California’s population distribution (which is obviously heavily skewed towards metropolitan areas).
